Coastal started with something pretty simple: I have always been inspired by coastal places.
The idea had been in my head for years before the album was finished. I am drawn to the ocean, weather, open space and the way those places change your mood. Iceland became a big part of the visual world around the record, and there is a family connection too. My grandmother Gloria painted the ocean and sea life throughout her life.
The actual music changed a lot while I was making it. The finished record mixes ambient textures, alternative rock, groove, layered guitars and a lot of collaboration. I was never trying to make a drummer album; I wanted it to feel like a complete piece of music.
